Eighteen

Once they had dropped off the syringes with Kirchner, Ember got news that Granny Alice’s lawyer was finally ready for an interview. She hurried back towards the main rooms with Kali nestled against her chest.

“I can’t grip on your shoulder like I used to,” the little cat said, smooching her face on Ember’s arm. “But I like the alternative.”

Ember looked down and blinked lovingly into Kali’s eyes. Her familiar blinked right back and rumbled with a happy purr.

They approached the interview rooms and saw Granny inside talking with her lawyer, who looked confident and comfortable. Ember knew whatever their defense was, it would be a good one. She wasn’t entirely sure she suspected Granny of much trouble, but the woman did go charging at her with a loaded gun.

You never really know anybody, she thought, forlornly. Maybe it didn’t matter which world she was in—it was possible that none of them could be trusted.

They entered the room and Kali immediately bounced on to the table, stalking up and down as she squinted her eyes at Granny and her handsome young lawyer.

“I’m Rick Atkins,” he said, half rising from his seat to shake Ember’s hand. “I’m a new defender. It’s lovely to work with you, Ember.”

She nodded and sat down, keeping her face hard.

“I’ll remind you that this is a murder investigation,” Ember said. “I’d appreciate it if you took it seriously.”

“I am,” Atkins said, still smiling. “My client has committed no murder. She can’t be arrested, there is simply no evidence.”

Granny stayed quiet, watching Ember and Kali with wide, shrewd eyes.

“She came at me wielding a loaded gun,” Ember said. “Assault of an officer, even attempted assault, is a pretty nasty crime.”

“Of course,” Atkins said, smoothly. “But I’d like to direct you to page four of the official statement.”

He picked up the stack of papers in front of him and shuffled them a little.

“I have it right here. In your own words, Ember, we have an admission here that you were, in fact, glamoured to look like Jeff McMurray.”

“Yes,” Ember said, defeatedly. “I thought I was going to meet one of Jeff’s runners.”

“You are aware that using magical abilities in that way can invalidate your evidence?” Atkins said, his tone cold. Ember’s respect for the guy went up a notch. He was very good.

“I understand that. I thought the information was worth that risk.”

“I see,” he said, looking through his papers again. “Just so I understand this, you arrested Alice on the premise of her being her grandson’s killer.”

“As a possible suspect with means,” Ember said.

“But not motive,” he snapped. “Accusing a grieving woman of murder without evidence is reprehensible. You know this. I want any charges dropped, immediately.”

“I can’t just wash an arrest like this!” Ember cried. “Who do you think you are?”

“I am an attorney given authority by the state itself,” Atkins said in a low, dangerous voice. Then, his face softened and he sighed. “Look, Alice had nothing to do with it. Just ask her and let’s all try to be nice about it.
